What the tip calculator estimates
Most major cruise lines add a daily hotel service charge or auto-gratuity per guest. That charge usually supports dining and housekeeping teams, and it shows up on your booking or onboard account whether you notice it at checkout or not.
CruiseStar’s tip calculator multiplies an editable daily rate by guests and nights, then lets you add discretionary cash for bartenders, spa therapists, or room-service favorites. The result is a sailing total you can plan around before embarkation week.
How line defaults work
Each cruise line chip starts with a planning default based on commonly published standard-cabin bands. Suites, regions, short sailings, and promotions can change the real number on your confirmation.
Virgin Voyages defaults to $0 because tips are marketed as included. Raise that field only if you intend to tip extra cash. Custom / other is for river lines, expedition brands, or any booking that does not match the listed defaults.
How to use the folio view
Tap a line, set nights and guests with the steppers, adjust daily tip if your booking differs, and optionally add cash. The receipt-style total updates live. Share the link to send the same estimate to cabin mates without sharing private payment details.

Auto-gratuities vs cash tips
Auto-gratuities and prepaid service charges are the big line item. Cash tips are still common for people who go above and beyond, especially in bars and spa.
If your line pools tips, cash still often reaches the person you hand it to. If you remove auto-gratuities (where allowed), you are responsible for tipping fairly yourself.

What about kids?
Count every guest who will be charged the daily rate on your booking. Some lines reduce or waive charges for young children; check your fare rules.

Why is Virgin Voyages set to $0?
Virgin markets tips as included. Leave it at zero unless you plan discretionary cash tips.

Should I tip in USD?
USD cash is widely accepted on Caribbean and many US-homeport sailings. On European itineraries, check what crew prefer and what your line recommends.
What if I am in a suite?
Suite service charges are often higher than standard cabins. Raise the daily tip field to match your booking instead of trusting the standard default.
Does removing auto-gratuities save money?
Only if you tip fairly yourself afterward. Removing the charge without tipping shifts cost onto crew. Plan the total, not the loophole.
Can I use this for river cruises?
Yes. Choose Custom / other and enter the daily rate from your river line’s documents.
Is my tip estimate stored on CruiseStar?
No. Sharing only puts the numbers in the URL. Nothing is saved to your account unless you use other CruiseStar features.
