Disney's first cruise ship for Japan has a name, and she is homeported in Tokyo. On October 14, 2026, Oriental Land revealed Disney Imagination, the first vessel of Disney Cruise Line Japan, at Tokyo International Cruise Terminal.
Imagination is a Wish-class ship built on the bones of Disney Wish, but the whole operation is tuned for Japan: short cruises, Japanese flag, and an operator (Oriental Land) that already runs Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea under license from Disney.

At a glance
- First ship of Disney Cruise Line Japan
- Wish class, based on Disney Wish design
- About 1,250 staterooms, 4,000 passengers, 1,500 crew
- 2 to 4 night cruises from Tokyo International Cruise Terminal
- First sailings planned for spring 2029
Why the name works
Disney says the name captures "the power of imagination, the heart of Disney's storytelling." That is the press language, but the art does the talking. The stern will carry Ariel and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid, with Ariel using a dinglehopper to draw the ship's name. Every Disney ship puts a character on the stern, and giving Imagination Ariel is a knowing pick for a ship that will debut in Asia.
The ship in numbers
The published figures so far: roughly 140,000 gross tons and about 340 meters long, with around 1,250 staterooms for 4,000 passengers and a crew of 1,500. Construction is at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, where work on the lower hull sections began in October 2026. Delivery is expected in autumn 2028, with commercial sailings planned to begin in spring 2029. The build carries a price tag of about 330 billion yen, including a 40 billion yen contingency.
What is on board
The announcement sketched out the hardware without naming individual venues yet:
- A theater seating more than 1,300 for original stage productions
- An outdoor deck stage with Disney character performances
- About 30 restaurants, cafes, and bars
- Three main dining restaurants, each with a unique theme and menu
- Dedicated children's activity areas and adults-only spaces
- Shops with Disney Imagination-exclusive merchandise
- Character greetings with Disney characters in exclusive cruise attire
Individual restaurant names, venue themes, and attractions are still to be announced.
How Japan's Disney operation works
This is not the Disney Cruise Line you know from Port Canaveral. The July 2024 agreement between Disney and Oriental Land created a licensing deal: the ship carries Disney Cruise Line branding, but Oriental Land operates the Japanese business directly, the same way it runs the Tokyo parks. Oriental Land is aiming for about 400,000 passengers a year and around 100 billion yen in annual cruise revenue within a few years of launch, and it has said a second ship is possible once the first is established.
Natacha Rafalski, president of Disney Signature Experiences, called the reveal "a significant milestone in the continued expansion of Disney Cruise Line and in our long-standing relationship with Oriental Land Group."
Who it is for
Japan-based Disney fans who have never taken a Disney cruise, Tokyo park regulars looking for the next splurge, and itinerary collectors who want to say they were on the first Disney ship built for Asia. Short 2 to 4 night sailings keep the commitment small, which is exactly the point: this ship is an introduction to cruising for a market where cruising is still finding its footing.
When you can book
Reservations are expected to open about six months before the ship enters service, which points to late 2028. Early press estimates put fares around 100,000 to 400,000 yen per person depending on sailing and stateroom, but those figures are preliminary, not confirmed fares. Itineraries are not announced yet, and the 2 to 4 night sailings are expected to be round trips from Tokyo.
